Spotlight Shines Bright on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Coastal Carolina is having an amazing sports year. Nope, it’s not a misprint. I didn’t say North Carolina, or South Carolina, its Coastal Carolina.

The Chanticleer’s captured their first Division One NCAA title in any sport by winning the 3rd and deciding game over Arizona in the College World Series 4-3. While it wasn’t officially their title, alumnus Dustin Johnson also just won the 2016 US Open at Oakmont Country Club.

Many of you are about to Google Coastal Carolina to find out where it is followed by, “What the heck is a Chanticleer?” You’ve come to the right place. If there is a logo out there, we’ll give you the full story.

Coastal Carolina University is located in Conway South Carolina. Conway is only about eight miles away from Myrtle Beach. The University has an enrollment just over ten thousand.

Now on to their mascot the Chanticleer which is certainly a unique sports logo name. Here is the explanation of the logo from GoCCUSports.com.

Chanticleer comes from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. More specifically, he comes from the Nun's Priest Tale, a story within Canterbury Tales. The Chanticleer is a proud and fierce rooster who dominates the barnyard. For the best description of Chanticleer, we turn to Chaucer's words. "For crowing there was not his equal in all the land. His voice was merrier than the merry organ that plays in church, and his crowing from his resting place was more trustworthy than a clock. His comb was redder than fine coral and turreted like a castle wall, his bill was black and shone like a jet, and his legs and toes were like azure. His nails were whiter than the lily and his feathers were like burnished gold." With all of his splendor and great looks, Chanticleer is also greatly feared and mightily respected by all.

Now that’s an awesome back story. GoCCUsports.com goes on to tell us that the name was developed in the 1960’s by an English professor and his students. Coastal Carolina was affiliated with the University of South Carolina at the time so they wanted something similar to the famous Gamecock. They kept it in the family and that’s the backstory of the sports logo that is in all kinds of headlines for all of the right reasons!

I love this logo. I think they did a great job making it look like a mean fighting rooster as well as using a lot of teal and blue in the logo. To me that’s a perfect fit with a school that offers majors in Marine Science.

Before Dustin Johnson and the College World Series, the school ‘s athletic program was probably best known for former head football coach David Bennett’s interesting description of wanting his kids to act more like dogs.

This video had a nice viral run with now almost two million views.
