Cam Newton Brings Concussions Back to the Forefront

The Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced off in the coveted Monday Night Football slot this past week. The game went on without the Panthers quarterback, three-time Pro Bowler and former NFL MVP Cam Newton. He suffered from a concussion in his previous game, when he took a (legal) hit from Atlanta Falcons linebacker Deion Jones late in the game, attempting to run in a two-point conversion. Newton is no stranger to taking hard hits to the head, as he has already been the seeming target for multiple helmet-to-helmet attacks. Earlier in the season, two players from the Denver Broncos received fines for hits they delivered to Newton’s head.

The National Football League is no stranger to dealing with player’s getting concussions. The league has instituted a “concussion protocol” in an attempt to better protect the health of players. The protocol uses various unaffiliated doctors and medical personnel, who use a variety of techniques and observational tactics, to determine if a player might have received a concussion or expressed concussion-like symptoms. Team trainers and doctors are also supposed to be monitoring for these same things, using instant replay on the jumbotrons and tablets at their sides. The issue with this protocol is lack of accountability.

Last season, Case Keenum was running the (then) St. Louis Rams offense. The quarterback took a hard hit in a late, last minute drive. Keenum was phased, displaying what many thought were symptoms of a concussion. Instead of being removed from the game, to receive proper testing and evaluation, the Rams coaching staff put him back in the game. The NFL remained silent on this issue. The team received no penalty or punishment for the clear lack of concern for a player’s health. Instead, the league waited until the following offseason, and implanted harsher penalties for teams that ignore the concussion protocol rules.

If the league didn’t penalize the Rams during the Keenum incident, why would they penalize a franchise now? This issue isn’t going away and the biggest question for the NFL and Players Association, is there a resolution in the future?

Major QB Injuries Haunt Two NFL Teams

The NFL season hasn’t even officially started yet, and some teams have been left to scramble around and figure out how they plan to truly compete. Two notable teams have suffered injuries to their starting quarterbacks, leaving the fate of their season unknown. These tragic injuries have left the Minnesota Vikings and the Dallas Cowboys looking to fill quarterback roster spots, with practically no time left until week one of the regular season.

This past Tuesday, during a noncontact practice, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffered a terrible knee injury. Bridgewater suffered a complete ACL tear, dislocated knee and other structural damage to his left knee. Sources have reported that Bridgewater was in the process of dropping back for a pass, planted his leg down and then immediately fell to the ground. An ambulance was called, and Bridgewater was taken to a local area hospital.

The Vikings are now on the prowl for a quarterback that could potentially give them some kind of winning record this year. Shaun Hill, the team’s current backup, is a 36-year-old undrafted free agent. Though Hill did spend several years as a third string player, he has had his time in the spotlight. Hill had impressive games with the 49ers, and was a stud in NFL Europe in 2003. However, at his age and at his current level of play, Minnesota will be looking to find someone that can better handle the starting role. But they aren’t the only team in need of someone who can run their offense.

The Dallas Cowboys have had more than one quarterback injury issue this preseason. Backup quarterback Kellen Moore fractured his right ankle during a training camp exercise, back in the first week of August. At that point in time, losing Moore was not truly devastating to the Cowboys. The team had just drafted Dak Prescott, and paraded him out in preseason games to see what he was made of. After showing some success, the team was comfortable putting the role of backup quarterback in the hands of Prescott. Unfortunately, tragedy struck the Dallas Cowboys again.

Starting quarterback Tony Romo was injured in last week’s preseason game, against the Seattle Seahawks. Romo was tackled, fell to the ground and immediately grabbed his back. Dallas Cowboy fans everywhere had the same exact thought at the same exact time: “Oh no, not again.” The team’s worst fears came true, and Tony Romo suffered yet another injury. He suffered a broken bone in his back and will miss several weeks. Now, the Cowboys are down two quarterbacks and also on the hunt to add to their roster, with the regular season just around the corner.

I hope both of these teams find what they need to fill their rosters. And I certainly wish their injured quarterbacks a successful and speedy recovery.

Huge Culture Shift With Virginia Football

You Gotta Earn It

Spring practices are underway for the University of Virginia football team. They are starting the season of fresh, with a new coach and a new set of standards. Bronco Mendenhall took over the head coach position this past December, and with him, came a new way of doing things. For the players, it has become very apparent that they are going to have to work hard to earn their spot.

The school’s famous “V Sabre” logo (as seen above) is missing from practice gear. Spectators won’t see the image on shorts, shirts, jerseys, or even helmets. Coach Mendenhall has taken it away, and with good reason: he wants players to earn the right to wear the school’s logo. I absolutely love the idea. Many players have fought for the right to wear the emblem. Blood, sweat and tears have been shed for the opportunity to display the logo. No one should feel entitled to it. Bronco Mendenhall may be doing things differently, but he has a successful history to back up his ways.

The new UVA Coach was previously with BYU, where he went to 11-straight bowl games and won 99 games in his 11 years with the school. The UVA players are going to be counting on Mendenhall to bring some of that success to Virginia, as they’ve only seen 11 wins in the last three seasons. With a new coach, and a new standard set, I’m sure we’ll see UVA find success.

Sports Logo Spotlight on the Carolina Panthers

We’re nearly at the one month anniversary of the Super Bowl so I think things have calmed down and we can move our minds from a Panthers loss to focusing on their awesome logo they dawn on their helmets.

The Carolina Panthers were announced as the NFL's 29th franchise in 1993, beginning play two years later in 1995. In their second season the Panthers made the conference championship game, falling short to the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Green Bay Packers. 

For the most part, the Panthers have maintained the same logo throughout its franchise's history, with the exception of some minor changes that were made between the 2011 and 2012 seasons. The lack of changes in the sports logo are for good reason, considering that this logo is among the best in the NFL.

This image contains personality as it depicts a roaring panther with angry fangs providing intimidation. In a physical sport such as football, you don't expect the logo to be friendly or inviting. Carolina’s logo sets the proper tone. 

I like the simple detail with the laser light eyes, the whiskers extending from each side of the nose, the shaping of the teeth, and the lining in the neck that creates a sense of muscle and strength. Simple detail has always been a very important part of a logo is far as I'm concerned. You don't want it to be overwhelming, nor do you want detail absent.

I am a big fan of the colors: black and "process blue." The blue color, which is a shade lighter than Duke's blue and a shade darker than North Carolina's blue, not only meshes well with the black, it’s a unique combination that we don't see often enough in sports. 

My biggest gripe about the logo is Panthers have little significance with the region. According to Charles Chandler of the Charlotte Observer, the Richardson family who owns the club, did not run any focus groups to determine the nickname. Instead, the principal owner, former NFL player Jerry Richardson had always wanted Panthers to be the nickname. As a matter of fact, according to that same story, Richardson began driving a car with the license plate PNTHRS as early as in 1989, four years prior to the Panthers entrance into the NFL became official. While that story is neat, it does not supplant the fact that the nickname and the location don't share any sort of true tie in with the Carolinas. That would be a long migration north from the Florida Everglades for the Panthers that exist in that region, thus the NHL’s Florida Panthers. With that said, the Carolina Panthers logo is enough for me to consider this a top-notch logo.

With a top notch defense and Cam Newton at the helm, this logo should be a contender for years to come. 

Just like Jerry Richardson’s affinity towards a name, the Cocksville Blockers awesome t-shirt shares a similar story. Of all the logos that Awesome Sports Logos creates, Cocksville is the only made up city. As you can imagine, the name was just too juicy to resist. The name actually popped into Founder Gavin Spittle’s head early one morning. Yes, he dreams of sports logos. He ran to the computer to try to find an area called Cocksville but the search fell short. The final product certainly delivers as this Rooster means business and will get in your way if you try anything he doesn’t like. This is our best-selling t-shirt and for good reason.

Super Bowl Start Time

What time does the Super Bowl start? This will be the most googled question over the next few hours.
 
I’m not going to make you wait until the end of the blog to give you the start times. We’ll even break down the time zones for you. The Super Bowl will begin at 6:30 eastern, 5:30 central and 4:30p on the west coast. Just in case you are wondering the Super Bowl will kick off at 1:30 in Hawaii and 2:30 in Alaska.
 
You better have the coffee ready if you are watching the game in England with an 11:30p start time. If you are in Australia, (Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!) you will actually be watching the game on Monday morning at 10:30a.
 
Currently as I write this, the temperature is -37F at the South Pole in Antarctica. The good news is that it’s supposed to warm up. Monday the temperature is expected to rise to -35F. That is some serious Penguin weather! According to our friends at Wikipedia, theoretically, this continent is located in all time zones. We’ll pick out one and call it a lunch time kickoff at 12:30p. 
 
How about our awesome troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan? In Iraq those that are serving in Baghdad will watch kickoff in the overnight hours to start Monday with a 2:30a start. In Kabul Afghanistan 4:07a on Monday morning. 
 
Hopefully you have had as much fun reading this as I have writing this. The Super Bowl will be watched throughout the world and it’s fascinating to see the times that people will be watching.

The New Los Angeles Rams Logo Falls Short

Los Angeles, where glitz and glamour shine bright and where stars are born. It’s Hollywood baby and more importantly for the NFL, it’s millions upon millions of opportunities for sponsorships and ratings in America’s second largest city. 
 
With the huge news of the NFL relocating a team for the first time since the Oilers moved in 1997, I was hoping that the now Los Angeles Rams would unveil a new fresh look. Maybe bring back the white and blue colors that looked sharp or even a fresh looking Ram.  Here is what we received instead in their logo reveal.
 
 

They could have taken their time and developed a fresh look or some kind of twist. The excitement was already there. There was no rush to unveil the new logo but the Rams almost did it immediately. This is L.A where trendy is part of their daily lifestyle. This logo made its way from St. Louis even before the equipment and office supplies. 
 
I’ll admit, I haven’t seen any sports logos of Rams across the country that have blown me away. You would think a creature that can do so much damage with its horns has the potential to be a top selling logo. Maybe a change is in their future. A great start would be to go back to the blue and white helmet and uniforms. When people move to another city or a new house, it’s a fresh start. The Rams should do the same with their logo and uniforms. 
 
We do have two sports logo t-shirts that are based in the Los Angeles area. 
 
 
 
 
A Chiweenie might look cute in purses, but you can’t make a sports logo with a purse. I love how this logo came out with a mean looking small dog jumping out at you with the spiked collar.

Off the coast of the Golden State on the Pacific Ocean floor is an eight-legged creature that is truly fascinating. Most common is the California Two-Spot Octopus.
